Granola ships no free tier at all. Its Pro plan runs $18/month, more than Otter.ai's entry-level Pro tier, with nothing to test before a card gets charged. Stack the macOS-only restriction on top and you've named the two things that actually send people looking for a replacement. Not a missing feature.

Granola's real mechanism is quiet: it listens to system audio while you type your own rough notes, then fills in what you missed and restructures the rest into action items once the call ends. No bot joins the meeting. That's the whole pitch, and it only pays off if someone was already going to take notes. Skip that step and there's little left for Granola to enhance.

Otter.ai is the obvious first stop, and for a specific reason: it runs on Windows as well as Mac, where Granola doesn't run at all. Otter's free tier covers 300 transcription minutes a month, real usage, not a demo cap, and its Pro tier starts around $8.33/month billed annually for 1,200 minutes. The tradeoff is the one Granola was built to avoid: OtterBot joins as a named, visible participant, which some prospects notice and ask about on a first sales call.

Fireflies answers a different complaint than Otter does: a sales or CS team that needs the call to land somewhere besides one person's private archive. It writes summaries directly into Salesforce or HubSpot fields through its own CRM integrations, and its Conversation Intelligence layer scores talk-to-listen ratio and flags competitor mentions across a whole team's calls, not just one rep's. Granola has no CRM write-back and no cross-call analytics at all; it was never built for a manager reviewing twenty reps' pipelines. Fireflies' pricing runs on a free tier plus paid per-seat plans, a different shape than Granola's single flat rate, though the exact figures move often enough that Fireflies' own pricing page is the number to trust, not one quoted here. The tradeoff mirrors Otter's: a bot joins the call by default, the exact visibility problem Granola exists to avoid.

Fathom answers the price complaint most directly. Its core recording, transcription, and AI summary have stayed free for a single user through most of its life, with a paid team tier added later for shared highlight reels and CRM sync across a sales floor. For a solo founder who wants Otter-style transcript quality without a recurring bill, Fathom is the harder tool to justify skipping. It still joins Zoom or Google Meet as a visible bot, the same friction Granola was purpose-built to remove, and it has nothing for someone who already types notes and just wants them cleaned up afterward.

Granola still wins the one case none of these three replace: someone already scribbling notes during the call who wants the bot gone entirely, on a Mac, with no interest in a transcript-first tool. Swap it out the moment a Windows laptop enters the room, a visible bot in the meeting stops being the objection, or nobody on the call was ever going to type a note in the first place.
